Wallace & Company completed multiple major ice rink construction and renovation projects at the Burnaby 8 Rinks facility, one of the largest and most recognized hockey and sports complexes in British Columbia.
The initial expansion added four NHL-sized ice rinks, advanced refrigeration infrastructure, modern change rooms, a full-service restaurant, the Vancouver Canucks Training Facility, and a sports medicine and physiotherapy centre. This large-scale construction was completed while the existing four-rink facility remained fully operational. The steel-framed structure features 100-foot clear spans, a 22-foot clear height, and a striking glazed curtain wall lobby. All rink slabs were constructed on timber piles with super-flat concrete finishes to meet professional hockey performance standards.
Subsequent phases involved full ice rink reconstruction for Rinks 5, 6, and 7. These upgrades required the removal of a frozen ground and peat mixture beneath the existing surfaces to allow for new foundations. Work included accelerated ground thawing, installation of steel mini piles, cast-in-place beams, and precast hollow-core slabs to support both the building structure and the new rink assemblies. The refrigeration systems were fully replaced along with sand, insulation, concrete curbs, and arena boards, delivering modern energy efficiency and high-performance ice conditions.
Across all phases, Wallace Construction successfully delivered complex sports facility upgrades on schedule and to the highest quality standards—demonstrating our expertise in large-scale arena construction, high-performance ice rink systems, and operational facility renovations.
